Capturing Memories: Tips for a Successful Extended Family Photo Session in Branson, Missouri

Wild Ivy Photography

Planning an extended family photo session can be both exciting and tricky. With family members living in different cities and juggling busy schedules, finding a time when everyone can gather is a challenge. Branson is a wonderful place to make lasting memories together and has something that will meet everyone's needs.

Choose the Right Time of Year

One thing I love about living in Missouri is that we have a solid 4 seasons. Any time of the year we can make a sessi0n work for you! Believe it or not, I have been able to find greenery even in the winter months.

I always keep the seasons in mind when planning- For example, I always suggest sunrise or sunset sessions in the summer to beat the heat.

Winter, I try to get outside during the warmest part of the day- or do an indoor session if we need! The fall trees are always absolutely beautiful, and I have some wonderful locations that will highlight those. Photos including the lake during the summer are always a hit, and the kiddos love jumping in afterward.

Selecting the Right Location

I love sending out a location guide once you decide on doing a session!!

My guide highlights all of my favorite photography spots in the areas, but I am always open to new ideas and suggestions.

Consider the Time of Day

Lighting is crucial for getting great photos. It can dramatically enhance the mood of your images.

For outdoor sessions, I love aiming for the golden hour—the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. This time offers soft light that flatters everyone and minimizes harsh shadows. If those times aren't possible, schedule your shoot for early morning or late afternoon, avoiding peak sun hours.

For indoor sessions, look for locations with lots of natural light. Large windows or an open space can significantly improve how the photos turn out.

Plan for Fun Activities

Keeping everyone engaged during the shoot can be a challenge, especially for young kids. To combat restlessness, I love to incorporate fun activities during your session. I love making the kiddos play games or tell jokes. It gets them smiling every time.

Bring along props like balloons, frisbees, or even board games that everyone can join in. This not only keeps the mood light but also captures candid moments that show your family's dynamic.

Also, make the session something fun they "get" to do- rather than something they have to. In addition, plan activity for after- dinner and some Andy's Frozen Custand or a trip to the arcade at the Branson Landing.

Cherishing the Moments

Planning an extended family photo session in Branson, Missouri, can be such a fun and memorable experience. It's a great way to preserve them memories while making new ones!
